Pushkara Navamsa is a traditional Jyotisha concept used to identify particular 3°20′ divisions of the zodiac that are considered nourishing or supportive. It is not a separate planet, yoga or prediction. It is a degree-based condition that is assessed alongside the birth chart (D1), the Navamsa chart (D9), planetary dignity, house ownership, aspects, conjunctions and timing periods.
This guide explains the degree ranges, shows how a planet is placed into its Navamsa sign, and uses South Indian-style charts to demonstrate the calculation. The examples are hypothetical and are intended for study.
Important distinction: Pushkara Navamsa is a complete 3°20′ range. Pushkara Bhaga is a single sensitive degree. A planet may be in a Pushkara Navamsa without being at the exact Pushkara Bhaga.
How the Navamsa division is calculated
Every zodiac sign covers 30°. Dividing 30° into nine equal parts gives nine Navamsas of 3°20′ each. Across the twelve signs there are 108 Navamsa divisions. Twenty-four of these, two in each sign, are traditionally identified as Pushkara Navamsas.
The planetary longitude must first be read within its sign. For example, Jupiter at Aries 21°00′ is in the seventh Navamsa of Aries, because the seventh division runs from 20°00′ up to 23°20′. That division maps to Libra in the D9 chart and is a Pushkara Navamsa.
For precise calculation, treat the beginning of a range as included and the ending boundary as the beginning of the next range. Thus 20°00′ belongs to the 20°00′–23°20′ division, while exactly 23°20′ begins the next Navamsa. A position written as 30°00′ belongs to the following sign at 0°00′.
Pushkara Navamsa degree table for all twelve signs
| Birth-chart sign | First Pushkara range | D9 sign | Second Pushkara range | D9 sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 20°00′–23°20′ | Libra | 26°40′–30°00′ | Sagittarius |
| Taurus | 6°40′–10°00′ | Pisces | 13°20′–16°40′ | Taurus |
| Gemini | 16°40′–20°00′ | Pisces | 23°20′–26°40′ | Taurus |
| Cancer | 0°00′–3°20′ | Cancer | 6°40′–10°00′ | Virgo |
| Leo | 20°00′–23°20′ | Libra | 26°40′–30°00′ | Sagittarius |
| Virgo | 6°40′–10°00′ | Pisces | 13°20′–16°40′ | Taurus |
| Libra | 16°40′–20°00′ | Pisces | 23°20′–26°40′ | Taurus |
| Scorpio | 0°00′–3°20′ | Cancer | 6°40′–10°00′ | Virgo |
| Sagittarius | 20°00′–23°20′ | Libra | 26°40′–30°00′ | Sagittarius |
| Capricorn | 6°40′–10°00′ | Pisces | 13°20′–16°40′ | Taurus |
| Aquarius | 16°40′–20°00′ | Pisces | 23°20′–26°40′ | Taurus |
| Pisces | 0°00′–3°20′ | Cancer | 6°40′–10°00′ | Virgo |
A compact way to remember the ranges
- Fire signs: 20°00′–23°20′ and 26°40′–30°00′.
- Earth signs: 6°40′–10°00′ and 13°20′–16°40′.
- Air signs: 16°40′–20°00′ and 23°20′–26°40′.
- Water signs: 0°00′–3°20′ and 6°40′–10°00′.
The D9 destinations are not guessed from the element alone. They follow the normal Navamsa sequence for movable, fixed and dual signs. The degree table above should therefore be used when checking a planet.
Worked example with planetary degrees
Consider this hypothetical set of sidereal planetary longitudes. Each longitude is measured within its birth-chart sign.
| Planet | D1 longitude | Pushkara Navamsa? | D9 destination | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Aries 21°00′ | Yes | Libra | Inside Aries 20°00′–23°20′ |
| Venus | Taurus 14°00′ | Yes | Taurus | Inside Taurus 13°20′–16°40′ |
| Mercury | Gemini 18°10′ | Yes | Pisces | Inside Gemini 16°40′–20°00′ |
| Moon | Cancer 7°15′ | Yes | Virgo | Inside Cancer 6°40′–10°00′ |
| Saturn | Aquarius 24°05′ | Yes | Taurus | Inside Aquarius 23°20′–26°40′ |
| Mars | Virgo 11°30′ | No | Aries | Outside both Virgo Pushkara ranges |

Navamsa signs
The South Indian format keeps the signs in fixed positions. The planets move into the appropriate sign cells. The D1 chart records the original sign and degree; the D9 chart records the Navamsa sign derived from that degree.
Example 1: Jupiter at Aries 21°00′
- Find Aries in the degree table.
- 21°00′ falls inside 20°00′–23°20′.
- This is a Pushkara Navamsa and maps to Libra in D9.
- Under the grouped Pushkara Bhaga list used by C. S. Patel, 21° Aries is also the exact Pushkara Bhaga.
This does not mean Jupiter must produce only favourable outcomes. Its house ownership, D1 and D9 dignity, aspects, conjunctions, combustion, retrogression and operating dasha still require examination.
Example 2: Saturn at Aquarius 24°05′
- Find Aquarius in the degree table.
- 24°05′ falls inside 23°20′–26°40′.
- This is a Pushkara Navamsa and maps to Taurus in D9.
- It is close to, but not exactly at, the grouped 24° Pushkara Bhaga. The Jataka Parijata list gives a different Aquarius Bhaga degree.
The placement may be read as a supportive modifying factor, not as an automatic cancellation of Saturn’s condition or the wider chart.
Pushkara Bhaga: why degree lists differ
Two degree traditions are often encountered. The grouped list associated with C. S. Patel gives 21° for fire signs, 14° for earth signs, 24° for air signs and 7° for water signs. These points fall within the Pushkara Navamsa ranges.
Jataka Parijata, Chapter 1, verse 58, gives a sign-specific list:
| Sign | Jataka Parijata Pushkara Bhaga | Sign | Jataka Parijata Pushkara Bhaga |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 21° | Libra | 24° |
| Taurus | 14° | Scorpio | 11° |
| Gemini | 18° | Sagittarius | 23° |
| Cancer | 8° | Capricorn | 14° |
| Leo | 19° | Aquarius | 19° |
| Virgo | 9° | Pisces | 9° |
These lists should not be merged silently. A careful reading states which convention is being used and keeps the exact Bhaga separate from the broader Pushkara Navamsa range.
How to interpret a planet in Pushkara Navamsa
Traditional practice treats Pushkara Navamsa as a nourishing influence, but it does not replace the rest of the horoscope. A structured interpretation should ask:
- Which houses does the planet own in the D1 chart?
- What are its sign dignity, house placement, aspects and conjunctions?
- Where does it fall in D9, and what is the condition of the D9 sign lord?
- Is the planet combust, retrograde, closely afflicted or otherwise modified?
- Is its dasha, bhukti or relevant transit actually operating?
- Do other methods and known past events support the same conclusion?
A Pushkara placement can strengthen the way a planet carries its significations, but it is not a promise of wealth, marriage, promotion, health or any fixed event. The same placement can manifest differently according to the whole chart and the person’s circumstances.
Accuracy and birth-time considerations
Planetary longitudes are sensitive to the selected date, time, place, ayanamsa and calculation settings. The Moon moves quickly, while the Ascendant and house structure are especially sensitive to birth time. If the recorded time is uncertain, the D9 Ascendant and house-based interpretation should be handled cautiously. In such cases, past-event verification or Birth Time Rectification may be appropriate before drawing detailed conclusions.
Reference and interpretation note
The degree framework in this article follows the traditional Pushkara Navamsa table discussed in C. S. Patel’s Navamsa in Astrology. The separate sign-specific Pushkara Bhaga list is identified with Jataka Parijata, Chapter 1, verse 58. Because interpretive traditions differ, the table should be used as one component of chart analysis rather than as a stand-alone rule.
Astrology is an interpretive tradition and not a scientifically established method of prediction. It should not replace medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.
